Looking Back: Vancouver 2010 Olympics

Oh, the Olympics! How easy you make it to sit on the couch and watch TV all day. While you may have your own opinions on the Olympics, I still can’t help but reflect on my time in Vancouver during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

I had moved to Vancouver just 6 months prior to the games with my friend and to be honest, I really didn’t even think about working, as in getting actual money, for the games. I was hoping to volunteer at a venue just to take in and be a part of the action. I applied to all kinds of jobs and volunteer positions and finally I got a call from VANOC, the organizing committee for the games, offering me a paying job for 4 weeks straight. Yes please.

In the weeks prior my friend/roommate and I started to get phone calls and texts from friends back home who wanted to experience some of the action as well. We said yes to everyone. We had a place with some couches and a floor. Anyone and everyone was welcome, until we ran out of space, of course.

I ended up working at the International Broadcast Centre and Media Centre right downtown and it couldn’t have been a cooler experience. My actual job was okay and I had early mornings, but it was totally worth it. I got to be outside a lot of the time helping visitors from all over the world get around the city, which I will admit was a bit silly as I had only been living in Vancouver for 6 months.

I worked with so many great people and became friends with a lot of those people. Even though we may not keep in touch much anymore, I shared a lot of wonderful experiences with them and that is what it’s all about. I’m thankful to my friends who came to visit us who share in some incredible memories. You know who you are.

I was over-tired, over-worked (I was still in school for 2 of the 4 weeks while working this full-time job), and over-joyed with my Olympic Experience and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So now, as I sit on my couch in a little mountain town and watch these athletes represent Canada, I will forever see the Olympics in a different light.

Denise! Thank you for taking all of these photos and letting me use them. :)
