Links ‘n Drinks

Oh Links ‘n Drinks, how I have missed you so! And this blog, I’ve missed it too, but sometimes life though, right pals? I big Happy Holidays to you and yours as they have officially begun. I am SO excited for some time off at the end of the month. We are off to a warm and sunny pace for Christmas and then back in Canada for a New Years Eve wedding.

merry and happy *photo from here.

On to the good stuff! Someone asked me the other day where I find these links and I questioned if they were human because, duh, the internet. Actually though, a lot of them I don’t discover myself but take from friends’ social media pages (thanks guys!). I love sharing things I’ve found that maybe you have or haven’t seen before. It’s just FUN! Plus, it’s Friday and I’ m sleepy.

Lost in the Mountains

(not actually lost)

Arguably I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. There’s a lot of them and beauty can be found anywhere so don’t get all “No you don’t, Ali” “Mountains and nature SUCK, Ali”… we’re all friends here. I’m reminded by the beauty that surrounds me every single day on my way to and from work and basically whenever I go out of my house. I was driving into Calgary yesterday for a work thaaang and I finally stopped at one of my most favourite views that I’ve ever seen with my own eyeballs. Thanks to this blog of mine and other electronic resources I get to share that view with you, my pals. I’m sure there’s a technical name for this lookout but it’s about 20 minutes into Kootenay National Park from Radium and it literally takes my breath away every. single. time. Enjoy!

PS. NEW SPECS in the video! My first pair ordered online and I’m pleased.

Finding a Mantra

less sleep….

I’m not one for lengthy cheesy quotes so when I find this baby I knew I had to share. Plus, anything that tells me to have more coffee, rocks – (I’m ignoring the ‘less sleep’ part, though… that’s just silly). As the holiday season approaches, it’s important to remember what it’s truly all about and not get caught up in the commercial side of the festivities. Spend time, not money.

PS. I’m in a bit of an inspiration funk and so the blog posts tend to stop. It happens.

Goal Setting

Are you a goal setter? Yes? Then we can’t be friends.

Kidding. We can ALWAYS be friends. But what I really mean is that while I may be a goal setter, I am not a goal achiever. While I always always make goals with the intention of achieving them, more often than not, something always gets in the way. I’m making it sound like I never achieve goals, but I do and I have: University, internships, jobs, travel, saving money. It feels GREAT to set out and achieve goals and I’ve noticed lately that I’ve stopped setting goals. I find they are really motivating for me, especially when I add a little treat upon achievement – so what if it works for 5 year olds, it works for 25 year olds too!

With that said, I am determined to become a goal achiever, not just setter, again! I’ll start a small list of little things I’d like to get done that day – laundry, work out etc – and then grow my goals from there. As my Christmas beach vacation approaches my current goal is to move every single day. Whether it’s 40 minutes on the treadmill or 15 mins of yoga before bed, I’ve got to MOVE IT MOVE IT!

What are your goals? Big or small? TELL ME! I WANT TO KNOW!

Better get going – I’ve got a workout to do. Have a fabulous day!

Travel: A Weekend on the Coast

September was a busy one. We were away almost every weekend and got to do a lot of really fun things which was the most perfect way to end an amazing summer. The last weekend of September we headed out to Vancouver and The Island for a weekend away. The original reason for the trip was to pick up our brand new vehicle, well, new to us! I’m so happy to have something safe and reliable for these sketchy Canadian winters. We decided to make a weekend out of it and head to Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina on Vancouver Island for a of couple days. It was to get away for a couple days, however, it POURED rain. Now, having lived in Vancouver for 4 years you’d think I wouldn’t let a little rain get in the way of a good time. Pals, this was rain like I’ve never seen before on the Coast. It didn’t let up, even when it calmed down a bit, it was still sprinkling. We had planned to go fishing one day but the seas were definitely angry that day. So much so the ferries were cancelled. We ended up putting a few crab traps in and were treated to fresh crab for dinner that night – yum! While it wasn’t the trip we were hoping for, it was still an experience and for that, I’m grateful!

Thanks for reading. Hope you have a fantastic weekend!

2 Ingredient Cookies

Maybe you’ve heard of/baked these before, maybe you haven’t. The point is, these babies are proven craving satisfiers and you won’t feel guilty in the morning.

Go to your kitchen and look for a couple of bananas and some quick-oats (regular work too). Boom. You’re done. That’s it! You’ve now got the makings for a yummy Friday night in watching Love Actually and sipping on tea.

Usually the bananas are better when they are super ripe aka past the point of eating but not quite brown. I find they just have more flavour that way and are much easier to mush – yes, that’s a technical cooking term.

Quick oats work best because they are usually smaller. If you’ve got regular oats, just chop them up a bit, or leave them if you’re into chunky oatmeal cookies.

The best ratio is 2 large bananas and 1 cup of oats. This makes enough so you have a couple the next day. I will say these cookies are best eaten right out of the oven, but they are a fantastic mid-day pick-me-up too! Mash everything together!

Now, you’ll notice in the photos that I have included chocolate chips in mine. That’s the beauty of these, you can add A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G you want to them! Walnuts, raisins, pistachios… the list goes on. Form into a rounded shape – but really, form them how ever you want.

I go from this recipe if you really want to see one. But after you’ve set the oven to 350 and slide those babies in for 15 mins on a greased cookie sheet, a recipe you need not!

YUMMY! Happy baking and I hope you’ve enjoyed this.

Dear Joey,

Can I call you Joey? I just think it suits you and those dimples a bit better, that’s all. I’ve been wanting to write you since that fateful afternoon after school when I first saw you in 3rd Rock From the sun aka best show ever. You, with your long silky hair and innocent puppy dog eyes. I knew I liked you, but it’s hard to tell just how much at age 10. Now at 25, know why you rock (…I went there). Like I said, you were (and are) so innocent and it allowed girls like me to ‘crush’ on someone that wasn’t a bad-ass, or in a boy-band, or too old. You allowed girls in band, musical theatre, student council etc., a legitimate crush because you were just a geeky boy-alien trying to make it in high school on earth. I thank you for that.

After the series was over and you had a done a few movies, most notably, 10 Things I Hate About You, you took a break. You said, “I want to educate my mind and explore a world that wasn’t in front of a camera.” Again, making it easy to love you. I supported you in this because I knew you’d come back. I know that education is important and that it’s something we would go through together, even though you’re 7 yrs older than me.

Then you came back. And boy did you EVER come back. The world was blown away by your wit, charm, and singing voice, but Joe, I knew you had it all along. I knew that those dimples weren’t gone forever and I also knew the world would discover them just as I had those many years ago. Now look at you! Besties with Zooey Deschanel, showing your muscle in The Dark Knight Rises, and being generally awesome. But recently, you’ve captured my heart again when you lipsynced SuperBass in a battle with two of my favs, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Merchant. Your moves, your grace, your DIMPLES!

So baby J, I’m here to tell you that you’re it! You’re the one!

Good luck and we’ll chat soon!

xo Ali (your star)

PS. I love you Steven, my live-in boyfriend!

While I love blogging oh so much, ever since I started Read Me, Dear I’ve struggled with content and direction. I’ve accepted that my blog is more ‘lifestyle’ than anything else. And so this way, I don’t necessarily need to categorize my blog into DIY, Fashion, Photography etc., and I’m comfortable with that as it allows creative freedom. There is one thing that I’m still undecided on, however, and that is just how personal do I get with readers? How much do I want people to know about me and my life that I splay all over the internet? I often wonder, if I were to get a little more personal and post serious discussions on my blog, would it grow? Would I get more readers the more in depth I get about my life? I just don’t know. Do people even care, really? Why do I think people even want to know every detail about my weekend or a DIY tip I picked up while perusing Pinterest? Because it’s not really about people… it’s about what interests me and what I think interests those around me.

I know that because I live away from my family and friends, this blog, my YouTube, Instagram, etc., allow them to feel a bit closer to me and the feeling is mutual. The internet is this glorious thing that allows us to stay connected to our loved ones despite how far away we may be. So when I post something that may be a little more personal, don’t be too alarmed. I want to test this ol’ blog out and see what it can become. Because as much fun (hopefully) it is for you to read, it’s even more fun for me to write.

Xo Ali

PS. Is there a topic I’ve written about that you’ve enjoyed and would like to see more? Maybe something I’ve never written about? Let me know. Even if it is my parents 95% pf the time, I love to read comments and connect with those who enjoy this blog.

Happy Friday, Everyone!

Are you as sad as I am about the end of summer approaching? I remember the days of having two glorious months off of school and spending every minute of everyday outside playing. I’m pretty sure it’d be safe to say I’m not the only one who wants those days back?! It’s been quite the busy summer so I’m looking forward to a quiet autumn and evenings in. Also, I’m sleeping like a baby now that the night time temperature isn’t 30+ degrees and that’s something I can appreciate.

Anyway, it’s been a while since I’ve done a Links ‘N Drinks and so I thought, GET ON IT GIRL!

  1. If this doesn’t make you laugh , then I don’t know what to tell you.
  2. If you hate the song ‘Blurred Lines’ as much as I do, then you’ll love this parody that’s actually an incredibly important statement for equality and that making a ‘joke’ out of rape and rape victims is heartless.
  3. Don’t ask me why… I was bored in a hotel room.
  4. I’ve never spent more than $10 on mascara but this one was tempting me too much. So I did it. I’m now in love. There’s no turning back. I’m late to the party, I know.

  1. If you’re hanging on to summer for dear life like I am, then you’ll love the “Seed Spitter” Watermelon Beer from 49th Parallel Brewing Company. We can find it in our little town so I’m sure you can find it where you are!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! I’m off early from work today to go house-boating! I’m beyond excited to get out of dodge and just hang out.

Yesterday I turned 25. Woah, life! Slow down please! I’m not whining and saying that 25 is old, because it’s not. I just can’t believe I’m here already.

I’ve always enjoyed my birthday, not for myself necessarily, but for a reason to gather and laugh and have drinks and dance – all things I love to do! The last couple birthdays, however, have been a little sad. I haven’t been able to put my finger on it, but I think it’s because life seems to be moving so quickly and I get scared it passes right by me sometimes. I have to remind myself to live in the moment and just enjoy, but it’s a lot harder than it seems.

Yesterday was a lovely day filled with puppies (not mine, unfortunately), breakfast in bed, lazing on the couch and a nice romantic dinner. We were dog-sitting a coworkers 5 month old pup who is the cutest little thing (see below and prepare for ‘awwww’ ing). I am a dog person. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about that one. I grew up with dogs and now that my childhood pups have past on, my puppy fever has gotten oh so bad. BUT, it’s a commitment and with our work schedules and the amount of weekend traveling we do, it’s not in the cards for us right now. I’m grateful I have friends and co workers who are fed up with my puppy fever and let me watch their dogs for the weekend.

My lovely boyfriend, Steve, made me breakfast in bed, which was actually my first time and it kind of rocks! We’ve had a busy summer and are away for the next few weekends so all I wanted to do today was nothing. So that’s what we did. I worked out while Steve stepped out for work for a couple hours and then the ass-to-couch-ing began. It was divine. Later, we went out for a lovely dinner at a nice little place in town and it was the perfect end to the day I turned 25. (I still can’t believe I’m 25 and I’m kind of still freaking out about it but also excited for life. So. It works. Man, life, eh?!)

I also decided to depressingly talk about turning 25 .
